How much does it cost to outsource 2D CAD drawings?

6 factors that influence the cost of 2D CAD drawings

Clearly, a key factor in deciding whether and where to outsource 2D CAD drawings will be price. The cost for individual projects will vary depending on a number of factors like complexity of the drawings, the required level of detail and how quickly the drawings are needed. It makes no sense to get a bargain if you end up with drawings that aren’t fit for purpose.

As a guideline, prices for 2D CAD drawings usually start from £50 for the simplest projects, like a simple floor plan. However, where 2D CAD is needed for complex projects, more drawings are required with more elements and costs will be correspondingly higher.

At MultiCAD our qualified CAD technicians ensure clients get a cost-effective service that delivers the necessary outputs, in good time. Here we outline those factors most likely to influence costs, so you’re armed with the right information when you go to outsource.

1. Size of project

A larger project will require multiple drawings, often with more components and/or layers. Some projects need drawings from different views (for example top view, side views and section cuts).

As you might expect, any of these will require more work and will therefore increase costs.

2. Complexity of project

Size and complexity together set the scene for the scope of work and hence both will influence costs. A more intricate design will need more work. This means a basic floor plan will cost less than a detailed mechanical systems plan.

The specialism and level of expertise needed also influences costs. Mechanical, electrical and fire protection drawings (for example) each have different requirements. Depending on the complexity of your project, you may need specialists in one or more of these areas. It may seem economical to work with general and/or in house designers. However, getting the right expertise involved at the drawing stage will avoid problems down the line and keep your project on track.

3. Turnaround time

In a perfect world, every project would be briefed well ahead of deadlines with ample time for collaborative discussions, to allow for a smooth journey down the project’s critical path. Back in the real world, 2D CAD drawings are sometimes needed fast. You can expect to pay more for an urgent service, though a truly professional design agency will always be fair about their pricing even for a tight turnaround.

Another thing that pushes up costs is the number of design iterations and revisions. Where possible, select an agency or designer who can demonstrate their experience in translating client needs into high quality drawings. This will minimise the number of iterations and will reduce the budget overall.

4. Customisation

Some projects will make use of existing templates or designs, which will reduce the costs. Where custom designs or bespoke solutions are needed, this will increase the price.

Another thing to consider is how many site visits your project will require and how much collaboration with other stakeholders (with other engineers, architects, etc) is needed. More of these can also increase the overall costs, which can lead to an unwelcome surprise later if it’s not been factored into the costs up front.

This is another area where experience counts for a lot, and a team experienced in projects similar to yours will readily understand the requirements and therefore quote more accurately.

5. Software and compatibility requirements

Before you brief 2D CAD drawings, it’s useful to think about who will be using them and what software or systems they must be compatible with, as extra requirements here can create more work and increase cost.

At MultiCAD we use industry standard software and ensure interoperability is maximised.

6. Post-project support

Some project requirements include adjustments and updates to drawings after the output has been delivered. A project may, for example, need 2D CAD drawings during the construction phase, and then As-Built drawings after completion.

This would add to the cost and may be included in the original quote or offered as an add-on, later.
