Chelsea Barracks

Sector: Residential
Type: Conversion of historic army barracks into residential apartments
Date: 2019
Location: London
Services: CAD

Phase 1 of the Chelsea Barracks redevelopment is an £8.4M scheme for residential development in London’s exclusive Belgravia area. It brought together many highly skilled contractors to create individual properties with values ranging from £2M to £50M in beautifully designed surroundings.

Project background

Located in one of London’s most expensive and sought after residential areas, the original Chelsea Barracks were built in 1862. The original accommodation was demolished in the 1960s and two 13 storey tower blocks were built to provide housing for four companies from the Guard’s Regiments.

In 2007 the Ministry of Defence sold the 12.8 acre site with plans drawn up for a residential development to include at least 50% affordable housing. Phase 1 of the plans consisted of creating 74 apartments and two of the seven planned garden squares.

One of the most exiting parts of the development is it opens the site up to the public for the first time in over 150 years, connecting the area with the rest of Belgravia. This provides community areas, space for health clinics, restaurants and tranquil gardens, alongside the luxury housing.

Later phases will see the completion of further housing, including penthouses and townhouses as well as more apartments, and the remaining five garden squares.

MultiCAD’s expert team provided

Our expert technicians produced in-depth 3D security design drawings for the site, using Autodesk’s Revit.

Main challenges

Long before MultiCAD’s involvement, there had already been significant delays to the project when the original planning application was withdrawn in 2008. As a result, the building’s owners wanted to to move swiftly with all elements of the design and construction.

The site required a high-quality and discreet security system, that respected the public areas and aesthetics of the development, while also providing sufficient security for the luxury residential areas.

Lastly, this was a complex project paving the way for the remaining five phases of work. It was essential for all contractors and sub-contractors to co-ordinate seamlessly using highly interoperable software and working from a single source of data, wherever possible.

Solutions provided

Our technicians are highly experienced in using Revit, and produced accurate CAD drawings that were then shared with the client at the click of a mouse button. The latest security equipment was incorporated into the designs and a flexible approach to inputs and requests for changes was taken.

We were delighted to be able to provide swift, reliable and accurate design work for this prestigious project.

Working with MultiCAD was straightforward from start to finish. They responded to the briefs quickly and with work of an excellent quality.
