One of the 40 new UK hospitals to be built by 2030, the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) has already been highly commended in the ‘Future Healthcare Design’ category at the European Healthcare Design Awards.
Project background
In 2023 Government approval was given for an £105 million National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) programme, with the hospital to be built under the Government’s New Hospital Programme.
The design of the NRC uses cutting edge construction and the latest in carbon efficiency, and has already won the ‘Net Zero Award’ from Constructing Excellence Midlands. These designs will support the ambition of the NHS to reach Carbon Net Zero by 2045.
The site for the new hospital is the former Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate, near Loughborough. It will be a 70 bed facility, capable of taking 750 patients each year through intense rehabilitation programmes to support their chances of returning to life and work after serious injury.
MultiCAD are working for contractor T Clarke, alongside other contractors VINCI Construction UK, Sir Robert McAlpine. The project is led by principal contractor Integrated Health Projects (IHP) and the hospital will be opening its doors to patients in 2025.

Deliverables required
MultiCAD’s expert team are providing
- CAD Services (to support MEP coordination)
- MEP Coordination
- BIM Services
This is a new building and MEP coordination will deliver a set of clash free drawings for all mechanical, electrical and plumbing services.
A BIM (Building Information Model) will also be provided for the MEP elements, using the industry standard software, Revit.
Main challenges
The challenge is ensuring the huge number of building services required for a modern hospital can be installed efficiently, without clashes and without costly delays. Expert MEP services provide early clash detection for building services like the fire alarm layout, lighting and ventilation systems. Problems can then be resolved before contractors are onsite, to avoid costly rework.
To support the NHS’s Carbon Net Zero goal, the designs must also support carbon reduction. Expert MEP services support this by optimising HVAC systems and improving lighting efficiency.
Solutions provided
Our specialist technicians are using BIM services to provide a single source of information for all contractors involved in MEP works, making collaboration seamless and efficient.

The timelines are critical and our team will ensure quick turnaround of high-quality designs that eliminate delays due to MEP clashes.
We have worked with MultiCAD on across a number of our projects. The team are responsive, knowledgeable and professional. We rely on them to deliver to tight timescales. They consistently meet our expectations and it’s a real bonus to find the work is delivered with a smile and from people we enjoy working with.
